Ms Huynh said young people look at what influencers are wearing for inspiration.

“I use the internet to get some styling inspiration and see what kinds of aesthetics are prominent,” she said.

“I saw influencers like Jennie Kim wearing Y2K stuff online before it became a trend, now lots of people are wearing it.”

Fast fashion brands, such as SHEIN and Boohoo, sponsor TikTok influencers to promote their products to their followers.

“When you see an influencer wearing clothing that you like, you’re going to want to buy it,” said Ms Huynh.

“The problem is most of those clothes are expensive, so you’re going to choose an alternative that is cheaper.”
